Furnace recall?
October 21, 2009
I wonder how did I not know about this? WWW.ismyfurnacesafe.com gives all of the details of the defective furnaces. As quoted from the site:
“According to the findings in two class actions
Have your furnace checked soon.
lawsuits, more than 49 brands of furnaces produced prior to 2001 may contain faulty parts. Often, these furnaces will operate for years without a problem. Yet they still remain a possible fire and/or carbon monoxide risk.
These 49 brands of furnaces have been sold by many of the most commonly known companies in the heating and cooling industry. Consequently, these furnaces with potentially defective parts can be found throughout North America. ”
49 brands of furnaces with defective parts that are a fire hazard! I am in the industry and did not even know there was 49 brands of furnaces. I also had not heard of this problem with these furnaces. They go undetected until they have a problem. The company that manufactured the parts has went bankrupt from all the lawsuits in California. Technicians in California and many other states are required to shut off the gas and give the customer a warning notice when finding one of these units even when no problem is visible. It is very dangerous. You think it would be more publicized. We have seen many of these types of furnaces in homes in the Dallas area. Anyone with a furnace that is manufactured between 1984 and 2001 should have it checked out to see if it is one of the units with these unsafe parts.
We are doing free safety checks for anyone in the Dallas metro that is concerned about their furnace.
Indoor Air Pollution
June 1, 2009
Indoor air pollution – is it a problem? Everyone knows about air pollution affecting urban areas and industrial regions. Mexico City and Southeast Asia have hit the headlines. But wherever there are cities and industry there is pollution, from industrial effluents and the omnipresent automobile.
But indoors? The fact is that indoor air can be one hundred times more polluted than outdoor air. As the majority of people spend up to 90% of their time indoors, this is a cause for concern.
“Sick building syndrome” is a phenomenon which emerged in the 1970s when, to conserve energy as well as to provide a more comfortable draught-free environment, many naturally ventilated buildings were superceded by airtight air-conditioned buildings. It is used to describe a situation in which a substantial proportion of a building’s occupants report a number of symptoms while occupying that building. It is estimated that as many as one third of U.S. buildings suffer from sick building syndrome. Symptoms experienced by people vary as widely as drowsiness, lethargy, nausea, headaches, nosebleeds, dizziness and respiratory problems.
What are the sources of indoor air pollution? Tobacco smoke is a major culprit, with its lethal cocktail of toxic chemicals. Insulation, synthetic fabrics, treated wood and carpets,
especially when new, release potentially harmful chemicals, such as formaldehyde, into the air. When this air is recycled indefinitely, high concentration levels can be reached. Printers and copiers emit toxic gases. Then there are chemicals used in the manufacture of computers, especially those added to VDUs as fire retardants, which emit high levels of pollutants when new. Even cleaning solvents make their contribution to the pollution. In some cases, prolonged exposure to this mixture can cause chemical sensitivities which may be difficult to cure.
How can indoor air pollution be dealt with? Potted plants can improve room air quality. They reduce levels of carbon dioxide and increase oxygen levels. Among the most effective are spider plants, rubber plants and yucca. Plants can even be used to monitor pollution. Plants can wither from pollutants before people start to sicken from them.
Regular maintenance of air conditioning systems is essential in centrally-controlled air-conditioned buildings. This should include coil, fins and filters for the equipment to function effectively. The most important maintenance task is cleaning or replacement of filters. Not only do clogged, dirty filters block normal air flow, but also can directly reduce the effective working life of the equipment. Not to be overlooked is the correct
installation of air-conditioning systems in the first place. Air intake ducts need to be properly located. If they are placed in polluted areas, the system will actually bring polluted air into the building.

May 7, 2009
A lot of people ask us here at a#1 air & appliance what the advantages are to any type of air cleaners. For the most part there are differences between all of them and you’ll need to find the one that works best for you. However today we’ll dive deeper into Infinity Air Purifiers.
One of the nice features of this this air cleaner/purifier is that it actually will kill the air particles when they come in contact with them. This is done through three different filtration. This is very different from your standard air cleaner/purifier which will simply just capture the air particles and it’ll be your responsibility to make sure they are properly disposed of.
Another nice feature is that it’s available in four difference sizes and can fit most Carrier systems along with other ducted system.
But be aware! You’ll want to make sure that your duct system is up to date and is capable of circulating air around your home correctly. If you do have a good system then you should be able to filter your air while you are away from work (8 hours).
But you are probobly wondering by now do I even need an air filter? YES! While there are a ton of choices make sure that you are looking for. There are some air filters that filter pollen, and there are some that will filter particles that are much, much, smaller in size.
If you don’t decide to go with the filter above you might also want to consider unsing ultraviolet light systems that will remove germs, mold, bacteria, and other harmful mircoparticles.
The other types of electric air cleaning include electrostatic preipitator, media charged filters, negative ionizer, and finally the most controversial the ozone machine.
To figure out which one is right for your give us a call here at A#1 Air & Appliance we’ll be sure that you get the right air filter that fits your goals.

Air Conditioner Maintenance – Prepare Now!
April 29, 2009
Spring time is in full force and now is the time (not later) to make sure that you are checking your Air Conditioning system now rather than later. By following some of these guidelines you’ll be able to tell if you need service now rather than waiting until those hot summer months and paying more on your electric bills.
1. Go outside! Make sure that your air conditioning unit is not covered up by any debris from winter or spring storms. When your condenser is covered you are not getting the full capabilities of the unit.
2. Set the temperature limits – By agreeing with other members of the household (or with yourself) on what the temperature is going to be set at you’ll be able to figure out quickly how much you’ll be using your system this summer. For some homeowners it’s 65 degrees which means more nights where the unit is running. For some other homeowners it’s 75 degrees which can mean that there are more nights where you can open the windows or let the air continue to circulate from the system’s running that day.
3. TEST! We can’t stress this enough. Test your system now! If you wait until the first heat wave of the summer you might be out of luck. We run specials to make sure that if your system needs new parts that it’s easier to afford.
4. Filters – It’s always a good idea to have a few filters on hand. Filters can save you double digits on your energy bills. Make sure that you change them regularly.
5. Check around the house for vent access areas – Make sure that you remove any furniture you migth have moved over the winter months. This will ensure the maximum results from your unit. Blocking vents in certian areas will delay your thermostats response time and you’ll end up paying more.
6. Check your windows – Make sure that your windows are up to date. If they are starting to let air in and out it might be time to seal or reseal them.
7. Clean your vents – Make sure to clean your vents. Do not pour water down them as this can damange your system and vents.
These are just some tips above to help keep your home as efficient as possible. If you require assistance or need help making sure that your home is ready for the summer give us a call today at 972-242-4800 and have us show you the A#1 difference in making sure that your home is running properly.
Stay Cool.
